Four of the five home teams won out on opening day with Philadelphia becoming the lone road side to taste victory by beating fellow new boys Oakland 4-3, despite going 0-for-8 on the powerplay; Kennedy scoring the game-winner eight minutes from time. Another battle of new teams took place in St Louis where they ran out 5-2 winners over the North Stars with Balon (MIN) and N Picard (StL) dropping the gloves early on.

The trio of Ferguson-Beliveau-Rosseau combined for seven points in Montreal's defeat in Pittsburgh, W Hicks scoring twice for the Pens including the GWG, and in a pair of Original Six battles Boston and Chicago won 5-4 over the Red Wings and Rangers respectively. Bucyk and Stanfield amassing three points each for the Bruins; Nesterenko scored twice to make him one of four Blackhawks to earn two points on the night.
