The Chicago Blackhawks were destroyed 7-0 on home ice for back-to-back defeats. They generated thirteen shots and have just two wins in ten games. The Bruins were rampant from start to finish as Williams (20) and McKenzie (31) found the twine twice while Sanderson and Stanfield picked up a pair of helpers each. Johnston earned his third clean sheet this season and Boston's three game win streak was capped off with goals from Green (10), Orr (9) and Shack (21).
F Smith (18) opened the scoring for the Red Wings playing in New York and, after Kurtenbach (9) tied it up for the hosts early in the second period, Bergman (16) and P Mahovlich (18) took Detroit out to a 3-1 lead with their unassisted goals. Goyette (18), a shorthanded effort from Ratelle (28), and Howell (6) turned the game around in the final frame to give New York a 4-3 lead, but F Smith (19) was on hand again to earn his side a point and a fifth tie in eight games as Detroit go ten with only one defeat. The Rangers are 3-0-4 in their last seven.
It looked it be an easy start fro Montreal as they went into the first intermission leading 2-0 thanks to goals from Beliveau (17) and Ferguson (11), but the second frame was a back and forth affair with Oakland pressing on tallies by Baun (4), Boyer (11) and a powerplay goal from Ehman (17) yet they were unable to get closer than one goal. The Habs were able to stay one step ahead on goals by Lamaire (18) and Duff (23) whose shorthanded score would hold up as game winner. Cournoey (29) insured the win late on and it's five in a row for Montreal with a single loss in their last ten. The Seals have just one win in ten, this their third defeat on the bounce.
The five game winning streak of Pittsburgh comes to a stop as they lose in St Louis who end their own run of seven defeats. Berenson (14) and R Stewart (5) pushed the Blues out a quick 2-0 lead before Konik (17) for the Pens and J Roberts (17) for the Blues exchanged goals. The second period saw Andrea (9) bring Pittsburgh back to within one but Melnyk (17) shorthanded snuffed out another comeback attempt. Schock (9) and Crisp (12) guaranteed the home win.
A rarity in Toronto as both netminders come away with a shutout. Parent's third of the season for the Philadelphia Flyers comes after stopping twenty-five shots but they still have one win in seven games. Bower for the Leafs stopped fifteen efforts on net for his fourth shutout as his side go 1-1-3 in their last five outings.
