A first win in five games keeps the Red Wings six points ahead of the surging Rangers, sinking Boston to their first defeat in five. Howe (38) began his three point night with a goal, helping Crashley (2) open up a two goal lead, before Howe (39) scored again, adding to G Jarrett's(31) goal to make it 4-1 after Williams (21) had got the Bruins on the board. Sather (9) and Westfall (7) helped make things interesting but F Smith (20) nabbed the game winning goal on the powerplay before Delvecchio (18) sealed the win with another PP effort. Esposito's assist gives him seventy points on the year (27+43) for Boston while Sanderson had three helpers for the same team in a losing effort.
R Hull (33), assisted by Pilote, scored for Chicago 4:34 into their game, but the only other goal of the game, also coming in the first period, was scored by Toronto's Ellis (29) on the powerplay off a pass by F Mahovlich at 13:47. It's a third tie in a row for the Leafs, their fifth in seven games, while the Blackhawks are 2-4-4 in their last ten outings.
The New York Rangers continue their late run with a big win over the Kings, extending their unbeaten streak to nine games with a fourth win in five. Two goals from Nevin (27) and a three point game for D Marshall (12) went a long way in helping New York to a 4-0 advantage in the second period. Kurtenbach (10) on the powerplay, Fleming (13), Goyette (20) and Hadfield (18) also beating Sawchuk in the LA net. The Kings had goals from Campbell (10) and Irvine (17) as they lose a third game in their last five.
Melnyk (19) scored the game's first goal and the only Blues goal in a big loss in Oakland as St Louis lose again after back-to-back wins. Erickson (5), Burns (14), Ehman (19) and Brenneman (14) all added to Hicke's (25) two goals and assist, with B Harris notching up three helpers, to give the Seals their first win in six, second victory in fourteen.
That result allows the Flyers to close to gap at the top to two points with a win over the North Stars who are now nine games without a win, Cullen (29) their lone goalscorer. Sutherland (22), JC Watson (7), Hoekstra (16) and LaForge (6) scored four unanswered goals after falling behind, winning their second game in four and fourth in sixteen.
