Switzerland welcomed back Reto Zeigler from his suspension for this final group game that only had bragging rights available for the two teams. After almost twenty minutes of very dull football the Swiss suddenly began their control of the match in the 19th minute. Blaise Nkufo got on to an Osman Chavez mistake and, after a neat one-two with Lichsteiner, the striker dispatched his shot neatly into the bottom corner.

The same player nearly doubled his team's advantage two minutes later with a spectacular bicycle kick that would have been a goal if was on target anywhere but straight at the goalie. The match returned to a lull until Gelson Fernandez was bundled to the ground to earn Switzerland a free kick. Tranquillo Barnetta stepped up to take it on, whipping it up into the corner for a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Both teams looked like they just wanted it to be over for most of the second half with many passes going astray and thankfully for everyone watching the end did finally come without much else to cheer about.

Both teams are forced to make a change with Arturo Vidal and Reto Zeigler serving their one-match suspensions. Contreas and Senderos move into their respective defences.

It was to be another miserable result for the Swiss but it could have gone so much better for them if Fernandes had put his 22nd minute header past Claudio Bravo on a corner kick. But luck was not on their side as five minutes later Jorge Valdivia's long range shot wildly changed direction and in thanks to the unnecessary intervention of Steve von Bergen.

From that point on it became the Humberto Suazo Show, scoring his first just two minutes after Chile had taken their fortuitous lead by slamming a loose ball through the hands of Benaglio after Switzerland failed to clear a corner. Minutes after he missed a great chance with the head Suazo made it 3-0 on another corner, Beausejour heading it down neatly at the near post for a relatively simple finish. And the hat trick was complete when he powered his final shot in underneath the crossbar in stoppage time after good work from Valdivia and Mauricio Isla in the build up.

Spain did enough to win, even without their usual amount of possession, and it only took four minutes for Fernando Torres to finish off Iniesta's neatly chipped ball into the box. After that Switzerland were able to exert some pressure on one of the tournament favourites with Eren Derdiyok unlucky to not score on Nkufo's far post cross; his header blocked on the line. The resulting corner found Derdiyok again but Iker Casillas was quick to save.

The Swiss continued to enjoy passages of play where they probed around the Spanish defence without much penetration, and Spain had more chances to score but Alonso (over) and Pique (wide) missed in good scoring positions.

Switzerland came close to equalising early in the second half when Derdiyok turned provider, his strong run and cross unrewarded when Blaise Nkufo completely missed the ball with a lot of goal to shoot at. Six minutes later and the game was over with Spain piling on the Swiss through a series of corners, ultimately making one count through Andres Iniesta.

The final talking point was a second yellow card to Reto Zeigler to make him the third player sent off in two days. He will be unavailable for the Switzerland v Chile game.
