New South Wales vs Victoria
Sydney Cricket Ground
24th, 26th-30th January 1920
Lineups:
New South Wales- H Carter, W Bardsley, CG Macartney, TJE Andrews, C Kelleway, AF Kippax, HSTL Hendry, AT Ratcliffe, ATE Punch, HRC Norman, AA Mailey
Victoria- ER Mayne, LA Cody, VS Ransford, RL Park, J Ryder, TA Carlton, WW Armstrong, JL Keating, LF Freemantle, PA Shea, JL Ellis
First Innings
In a must win match Victoria had their opponents on the ropes early when W Bardsley's exit for 5 was swfitly followed up by the departures of CG Macartney and TJE Andrews, both for ducks. With H Carter sticking around however, enter C Kelleway and AF Kippax to put together some good scores. With the exception of ATE Punch and his 46, the tail returned to the team's earlier form to prevent themselves from reaching 400.
NSW 385
AF Kippax 138; C Keleway 90; H Carter 68
TA Carlton 4-143; J Ryder 3-83
It was an eerily similar start to Victoria's innings as they also found themselves 11-3. The surviving starter, ER Mayne, made his half-century, while the fifth and sixth men in the order romped along. Despite HSTL Hendry making history, becoming the first bowler in the Shield to take eight wickets in a single innings, he was unable to remove to of three centurions before they caused havoc.
NSW 385
VIC 607
JL Keating 141; J Ryder 123; TA Carlton 115; LF Freemantle 69; ER Mayne 59
HSTL Hendry 8-174; AA Mailey 2-101
Second Innings
The first three wickets fell quickly once again with TJE Andrews caught for the second time with no runs. C Kelleway and AF Kippax were duly dealt with before they could get into a rhythm, and the only men standing in the way of an innings defeat was AT Ratcliffe and ATE Punch who powered the team on from 161-7 their final score.
NSW 385 + 341
VIC 607
AT Ratcliffe 107*; ATE Punch 70; H Carter 65
JA Carlton 4-97; J Ryder 3-80
ER Mayne continued the rich vein of form found for both teams' number one, gathering over half the required runs for victory. HSTL Hendry surprisingly fell short of his tenth wicket on a turning pitch, and New South Wales now have to wait and see if Victoria can beat South Australia in the final match of the season, and beat them well enough to win the Sheffield Shield on the quotiant rating tiebreaker.
NSW 385 + 341
VIC 607+ 120-3
ER Mayne 65*; VS Ransford 19
HSTL Hendry 1-28; AA Mailey 1-29
Victoria win by seven wickets.
This blog is to share results in my sports replay gaming. All of the games involve pencil, paper, cards and dice; no digital gaming here. Most games are full season replays, but there will also be some fictional competitions thrown in. It's been a while, but I hope that 2017 sees a return of blog activity.

- I have been an M.E. sufferer for a long time now, but sports replay gaming is an easy hobby for me to enjoy. Originally from Canvey Island, Essex, I was introduced to replay gaming a few years ago, leading to my first purchase: Cricket World. Most sports I share will be common, but there are some more obscure replays thrown in. Thank you for visiting and I hope you enjoy your stay. Feel free to say hello! - Chris
