Two ducks followed the second dismissal: VY Richardson and NA Walsh were both caught, but AJ Richardson carried on until near the end of play on day one. Both sides shuffled the deck and changed the look of their lineups for the return match. Victoria struck early when FA Tarrant took care of GW Harris (9) lbw, and it was the same bowler who dismantled the resulting partnership between AJ Richardson and NA Walsh (63), but not before they surpassed their half-centuries. AEV Hartkopf then took his three wickets in quick succession, VY Richardson the highest scorer in the 4-6 slots with 36. Step up FK Gould with South Australia on 203-5 and he would only be removed (bowled by AE Liddicut) to make the score 400-9. One member of the tail, AM Ambler, also pitched in with his 57 runs.

In the first match both WH Ponsford and WM Woodfull made good centuries in Victoria's win over SA, but AJ Richardson and CV Grimmett took care of them respectively for ducks leg before wicket. HSB Love just made it to double-figures before he was stumped and it fell upon the shoulders of three men to make things respectable at least. Surviving opener ER Mayne and FA Tarrant made a partnership of 119, the latter pairing up with highscoring HSTL Hendry for another 40 runs before he too was stumped.

Both sides shuffled the deck and changed the look of their lineups for the return match. Victoria struck early when FA Tarrant took care of GW Harris (9) lbw, and it was the same bowler who dismantled the resulting partnership between AJ Richardson and NA Walsh (63), but not before they surpassed their half-centuries. AEV Hartkopf then took his three wickets in quick succession, VY Richardson the highest scorer in the 4-6 slots with 36. Step up FK Gould with South Australia on 203-5 and he would only be removed (bowled by AE Liddicut) to make the score 400-9. One member of the tail, AM Ambler, also pitched in with his 57 runs.

DE Pritchard partnered him the longest, unlucky not to get his half-century, but only EGC Wainwright (37) and HFT Heath (20) reached double figures from that point on. PH Wallace was really hammering the ball in on the batsmen with four leg before wicket decisions going his way.

In between, EL Bowley took one to the head forcing him to retire on a single leaving his team 3-3. With PD Rundell moved down the order after his own retirement in the first innings, DE Pritchard was partnered with NA Walsh and that is when the South Australian fireworks began as they put together a 186 run partnership before Pritchard and EGC Wainwright (0) went down. NA Walsh went on to his next milestone and, outside of the unbeaten zero of AM Ambler, the lower order scored 11, 22, 24, and 38 runs; RJB Townsend registering the highest of these.

The openers took the side into triple digits and another wicket later they were 157-3. AEV Hartkopf and WH Ponsford then kicked on before both men went for lbw off AJ Richardson and Victoria were at 324-5. Another two big scores saw them cruise into the 500s, eventually falling to the two big South Australian threats, yet not before they passed 80 runs each.
