If New South Wales' first innings score on a bowling pitch was below par then Victoria's was dismal. ER Mayne (29) and WM Woodfull 23) were out back-to-back and the score was 53-2, but that was followed by HSTL Hendry and AE Liddicut for ducks. FA Tarrant and AEV Hartkopf survived together an 85 run partnership, but CHW Lawes and JD Scott were not to be denied aside from the final wicket (PH Wallace 12, c. wicket-keeper, b. MW Bosley).

The pitch was disintegrating below their feet but HO Rock and JG Morgan's opening partnership was value for money at 170; HO Rock ending on the unluckiest score. A ray of light for Victoria followed with AT Ratcliffe (6) caught in daring fashion and AF Kippax (17) also ending up in someone's hands. BM Salmon (46) and AP Wells (35) did fine in the difficult circumstanes, but CV Morrissey excelled, lasting longer than anyone in the match.

South Australia's whirlwind season rolls on for their third match of the season; all four of their contests will be played in a row before Victoria and this NSW side meet. It was tough going for the home side early on as FK Gould (44) and DE Pritchard (67) held on in there to partner centurion AJ Richardson. Two ducks followed the second dismissal: VY Richardson and NA Walsh were both caught, but AJ Richardson carried on until near the end of play on day one. The unlucky JW Rymill (49) and EGC Wainwright kept things flowing on day two, with TW Wall constructing a good score as well.

ER Mayne was a quick out, caught at slip off HSTL Hendry's bowling, and then things stabalised for the team with 40+ scores from WM Woodfull and WH Posnford sandwiching the tally from HSB Love. J Ryder (3) and AEV Hartkopf (0) left together before AE Liddicut set to his days' work.

At that point JCLS Wall took care of both ER Mayne (36) and half-centurion WM Woodfull by lbw and bowled respectively. The trio of HSB Love, WH Ponsford and J Ryder only managed to rustle up a further 44 runs between them, all dealt with by AA Mailey, but the day was saved by AEV Hartkopf more than making up for his first innings duck. PH Wallace (41) provided some valuable runs late on as the pitch disintegrated under their feet.

ATE Punch managed to weather the storm, but only WAS Oldfield joined him in scoring more than 18 runs. Victoria can now take the Sheffield Shield with a win in the final match of the season.
