Controlled Chaos - Spring Fling Derby Standings
Joe Ramage is your new championship leader taking a ten point lead thanks to his third podium finish in a fourth consecutive final. Spring Fling Derby winner Chris Henton flies up the rankings and claims his spot in the top twenty for the next invitational. Four time finalist Andy Bing and two time heat winner Darrell Andresen just make the cut leaving Bob Alexander (6th Arizona, 10th VDM) as the driver who has to
make way as he, and those below him in the standings, sit out the Idaho

Chris Henton, Charlie Clayton, Randy Corson, Will Murphy, Timmy Barnes, Lynne Higgins, Ricky Grimes, Will Thompson, Joe Ramage, Sam Harbin, Darryl Lozier, Jason Ingle
With another invitational coming up, this one for the top twenty drivers, every point mattered as the twelve jostled for a place in that elite group. It was as short lived debut final for Timmy Barnes as Will Murphy slammed him into the barrier where he stayed until the officials counted him out. Moments later and Ricky Grimes, also in his first final of the year, was finished off by Lynne Higgins after taken several stern shots from the pack.
Charlie Clayton was the first to collect a point in his second final (7th Frostbite) after taking a blindside hit and leaving with a minor injury, and he was soon joined on the sidelines by an ill prepared Jason Ingle in ninth position for his first points haul of the year, and Randy Corson, fifth in Arizona and Tampa, was done in eighth place after taking a real beating from all-comers while he sat helplessly stalled.
Will Thompson will most likely lose his top spot in the standings despite a fifth top seven finish of the year. Multiple drivers were more than happy to hit Thompson if he came near but it was a hard collision with Darryl Lozier that did the most damage, locking them together until Lozier wriggled free and left his opponent as dead weight.
The runner-up at Frostbite Sam Harbin was eager to get at Lozier at the start of the final but an untimely miss imbedded his vehicle into the barrier opening him up for the coup de grace by Joe Ramage, and a third top five finish for Lynne Higgins sees her make a move up the standings spending this final focusing on Lozier and Corson before succumbing to her own damage.
Darryl Lozier came in to the final very well prepared but seven hits against him finally added up; his period of the derby locked up with Thompson did him no favours as he ended up in fourth. Will Murphy has made four of the season's seven finals and he was finished no worse than fourth in each of them and this third place helps him gain ground on a few above him after Chris Henton finished him off late on.
The finale was between debutant Chris Henton and the winner of the Valentine's Day Massacre and fourth straight finalist Joe Ramage. Ramage, who would claim a top two finish for the third time and take the lead in the standings no matter what, had spotted Henton early on and got in a couple of shots before dealing a fatal blow to Higgins. As it turned out Henton did not need to hit his remaining opponent but instead wait for the contact that would end Ramage's hopes of a second derby win this year.

Danny Krol, Steven Redden and Darrell Andresen all missed on their opening attempts to hit someone while Jess Yates and Ben Hadsell were blindsided by Steven Redden and Phillip Ruffin respectively. Two of these four would drop out soon after their early excitement; Andresen missing his third straight final after reaching three of the opening four; Ruffin becoming stuck and freeing himself only to be attacked by Hadsell and Joe Ramage.
Andy Bing and Matt Welliver would both stall out in tenth and ninth positions before the action really came to a head. Bambi Rogers had survived a long stall at the start of the heat, miss an intended target and end up in eighth thanks to a lot of attention from Yates. This was quickly followed up by the eliminations of Hadsell, Yates and Redden. Krol postponed his attack on Jason Ingle to tear up Redden putting his victim onto a stretcher, but this proved to only be a precaution.
Krol was then the odd man out of the final four as he resumed his duel with Ingle and lost. Jason Ingle reaches his second final of the year (12th Frostbite) but he had to re-fire from a dangerous stall in the middle of the heat, but also managed to hit five different drivers on either side of this. Two of his hits were on fellow finalist Joe Ramage who was intent on destroying first Ruffin then Redden helping him on his way to a fourth straight final. The final driver to make it through is Will Murphy and after finishing in the top four in three straight finals (4th Arizona, 2nd Tampa, 4th VDM) he reaches his first in three events by barely surviving a late stall after missing two targets.

Half of the top ten in the current standings were together in this final heat and it was seventh placed Leo May who was the first of this group to fall as he became stuck on the scenery after a sustained assault on Rob Remaley. Prior to this exit however were the eliminations of Bob Alexander who was hit six times, twice by Darryl Lozier, and Randy Tondreau who was a brutal victim of Danny Krol's wrath.
Over eight minutes had passed when May was counted out and what followed was a flurry of eliminations starting with four time finalist Remaley who stalled several times but continued to re-fire only to finish in ninth place. Dick Garrett was the unlucky driver who would miss out on the consolation heat as Jess Yates was unforgiving in his treatment of a man stuck against the barrier. Seconds later both Will Murphy and Steven Redden were done, the former stalling out after heavy attention from Lozier; Redden re-firing his engine only to become a sandwich between Lynne Higgins and Lozier.
Danny Krol had been a thorn in a few sides hitting Tondreau four times and Yates three, the latter pipping Krol to fourth spot thanks to an illegal hit disqualified one driver and crippled the other. The final three would not last much longer, championship leader Will Thompson finishing in third after spending much of the heat chasing his fellow finalists.
Runner-up was Darryl Lozier who was happy to go back and forth with Murphy before coming out second best in a battle with Lynne Higgins. Higgins, who wins her first heat of the year, focused on Redden in the early going before blindside hits from Krol and May almost upset her day. She redoubled her efforts and helped finish off Redden before wiping out Thompson and then Lozier.

After finishing two of the last three rounds in the top three (tied 2nd at VDM, 1st in Wisconsin) Tom Gareipy was disqualified very early on for an outrageous hit on Jamie Eilers who suffered as a result and was quickly eliminated by a merciless pack.
A bigger drama was still to come though when Scott Hutchins was slammed up and over the barrier by Chris Henton. Hutchins would suffer no injury but his day was over three minutes in. The heat proceeded in a calmer fashion and Tommy Miller was the next man down, triple teamed by Henton, Bobby Gallagher and Timmy Barnes, before Gallagher became the new whipping boy.
Joe Ramage survived just long enough to put himself into the consolation heat and hope for some good fortune as he tries to continue his fine form. He will be joined in the second chance race by Darrell Andresen who threw his weight around before Andy Bing put him down for good; Matt Welliver who stalled out after battling with Barnes then Ramage; and Bing who nigh on crippled himself in his final shot on Andresen.
The final three brought the heat to an abrupt close with Barnes starting working over Eilers before moving through the pack ultimately coming off second best against Charlie Clayton. It would be Clayton who just missed out on the two points for winning a heat but he was lucky to even make the final after he re-fired a lengthy stall at the start.
That means Chris Henton reaches his first final of the season crushing Hutchins and helping to eliminate both Miller and Bing. It was especially fortunate for him to win as he was blindsided no less than three times, Barnes, Clayton and Ramage all ctahcing him off guard.

Sam Harbin was a touch of bad luck as first Bill Malbrough was eliminated after colliding with the Arizona Derby runner-up, and then John Ruiz stalled out after he too made contact. John McCrory had little chance of progressing in Buffalo with Norm Gibson tormenting him, and only him, for over five minutes; Randy Corson and Bambi Rogers also getting a couple of licks in.
Gibson went down next in ninth, Rogers the finisher, and Ed Smith became the second driver to stall his car and fail to re-fire the engine, leaving both men still searching for their first final. Bambi is another driver yet to break her duck but she will have a second chance in the consolation heat after finishing in seventh place. After taking it to the two drivers already mentioned she then missed her next target leaving her wide open for Phillip Ruffin to take her out.
Ben Hadsell was locked up with Jason Ingle for a couple of minutes before a hard hit from Ricky Grimes separated them before Ruffin blindsided Hadsell, ending his race in sixth. The other two who will compete in the consolation final are Ruffin and Ingle, the former finished by Corson and the latter losing a three-way against Harbin and Grimes.

Controlled Chaos - Spring Fling Derby Preview
The lords and ladies of destruction, minues the injured Billy Edgington and Reggie Banks, move on to Buffalo, New York for the seventh round of the season. This event is another chance for the drivers to position themselves for the next invitational where only the top twenty competitors will appear.
