The opening race saw Brian Thiel get away fastest, but found himself falling back halfway through allowing Jack Wyatt to just edge him home on the popular right lane.

It was all looking good for Jeff Arend until halfway down the track when he had to control the wheelspin, leaving Jerry Toliver to pick up the victory.

Both drivers had to slap the pedal early on with Bob Gilbertson unable to correct in time.

More spinning wheels down the right side of the track was enough to put Del Worsham over his opponent despite some minor mechanical trouble before the line.

Bob Bode won't be at all happy when he takes a look at his time sheet, and this was compounded by a major problem with the inner workings of his car. The younger of the Pedregon brothers will be ecstatic over his first race following on from finishing top of qualifying.

Both men left together, but Ron Capps was able to ease away down the whole length of the track for a faultless win.

The penultimate race of the first elimination round was a cruise for Force-Hood despite the sloppy start. Grant Downing's clutch gave him all kinds of problems, ultimately leading into a lot of work on the pedal as the wheels spun up big time.

The final place was settled with Bob Tasca III matching Jack Wyatt's time exactly. A little wheelspin was enough to end any hope of Robert Hight coming back, but the race looked to be long decided at that point.
