A five minute major for Shack in the second period gave Montreal the chance to score two powerplay goals, including Lamiare's (14) second of the game which proved to be the game winner. Cournoyer (22) added a pair of his own with JC Tremblay (4) and Redmond (6) playing the supporting cast. For Boston it is their first back-to-back defeat since the turn of the month; Orr (7) had a two point night, Krake (5) scored shorthanded and Awrey (2) closed out the scoring.
St Louis suffer their fourth loss in seven games and become the final team in the West to lose ten on the road but stay in control of their conference. Detroit took a 2-0 lead through Bergman (12) and T Hampson (4) before Hucul (1) scored unassisted and then Berenson (11) tied the game. The Red Wings retook the lead before the intermission, P Mahovlich (11) scoring the go-ahead goal, but they had to rely on two goals from Henderson (10) to claim their third win in ten games, including the game winning penalty shot; MacGregor (12) also scored for Detroit as part of his three pointer while the blues had scoring from St Marseille (9) and Melnyk (13) who had five points between them.
Things remain grim in Philadelphia as their recent play shows an 0-7-1 record, only Hannigan (14) scoring for the Flyers as the powerplay went 0-for-9, but the Minnesota North Stars are just one point behind them in third place thanks to their first win in five and fifth in seventeen. Boudrias (16) scored a hat trick, Connelly (31) punching in the finisher.
