A full house of games begins with Philadelphia losing their fifth straight to winless in nine with just one tie in that time. Detroit took a 3-0 lead, K Douglas (4), P Mahovlich's (13) first of two on the night, and F Smith (14) scoring for the Wings, but a pair of fights between Kennedy and Jim Watson fired up the Flyers with Dornhoefer (12), Rochefort (14) and Blackburn (5) staging the comeback. In the end though it was all in vain when P Mahovlich scored his second with Ullman (13) capping a three point match on his insurance goal.
Another team who can't buy a win are the Oakland Seals who had a goal from Caron (5) to avoida shutout in Minnesota but remain without a victory in four straight. The North Stars enjoy back-to-back wins for the sixth time this season and move above the Flyers to take second spot in the West thanks to goals from Woytowich (2), P MacDonald (16) and an empty netter from Cullen (20) for his fortieth point this year.
The first of two Original Six matchups on the day saw Boston lose a third consecutive game for the first time this season. Krake (6) opened the scoring for the Bruins in the second period, but Beliveau (11) tied it up before the intermission with Backstrom (12) and Duff's (13) empty net effort moving the Montreal Canadiens back above Boston into second place in the East with a 9-2-1 record in their last twelve.
Konik (12) for the Penguins and White (5) for Los Angeles enchanged goals either side of the first intermission but it was the third period that produced the fireworks with thirty of the games' sixty shots fired on goal in the final twenty minutes. Joyal (14) gave the Kings a 2-1 lead as he, Joyal and Labossiere all hit thirty points on the year, but they still have just one win in their last five and trail Pittsburgh by two points in the battle for that final playoff spot. The Pens came through with goals from Bathgate (16) and Andrea (3) who scored the game winning goal at 15:28 for his teams first back-to-back win since the start of January.
New York's three game winning run comes to an end after they ended up losing by the odd goal in nine against St Louis who move five points clear at the top of the West with their fourth victory in six games. Crisp (9) scored four times, the first three coming on a busy Blues powerplay, with Ecclestone (6) also getting on the act with the man advantage. The Rangers had a multi goal game from Ratelle (19) as he opened the exciting night's scoring, and he was joined on the scoresheet by Goyette (15) and Hadfield (10)
The final result of the night came in Toronto where they hit their second six game winning streak of the year thanks to a ninth win in ten games. Chicago become the last team in the NHL to lose ten road games and are winless in three straight thanks a to a seventeen shot shutout by Gamble, his third clean sheet of the year. At the other end of the ice Walton (26) scored twice, including the game winner, with Conacher (8) on the powerplay, L Hillman (3) and Pappin (8) also scoring.
