The lone game was between the old rivals from Toronto and Montreal as the Canadiens took control in the first period and never looked back. Goals from Cournoyer (23) and two from Provost gave the home side a 3-0 advantage at the first intermission, out-shooting the Leafs 18-8. F Mahovlich (17) tried to start a comeback but goals from Rousseau (9) and Provost (7), completing his hat-trick, looked to have the game settled with one period to play.
Oliver (10) and Walton (27) could have made things interesting late on if not for Duff (14) scoring to tie Montreal for the league lead with Toronto with their fourth winning streak of the year of at least three games.
