The Chicago Blackhawks survive their first elimination game despite not being able to stay out of penalty box throughout the first half of the game. The game started on a hostile note as Carl Brewer and Al MacNeil dropped the gloves and scrapped soon after the opening faceoff, and Chicago stayed on an aggressive footing with four consecutive minor penalties; three of them coming in the first period.
The Leafs finally made their shot advantage count through Kent Douglas late in the second period before a momentum changing goal from Jack Evans fifteen seconds from time tied the game. Douglas had two goals in the regular season while all of Evans' twelve points were assists. Kenny Wharram scored the goal ahead goal that would prove to be enough with Glenn Hall denying all further attempts to score on him; Murray Balfour adding an insurance goal late on during Chicago's only man advantage.
