18th-19th, 21st-24th December 1913
Lineups:
South Australia-ER Mayne, RF Middleton, AG Moyes, DM Steele, CE Pellew, GC Campbell, HB Willsmore, WS Stirling, WO Cooper, AP James, AW Wright
New South Wales- C Kelleway, HH Davis, JM Taylor, RB Minnett, W Bardsley, TJE Andrews, H Cranney, HG Pratten, JD Scott, AT Ratcliffe, JA Randell
First Innings
New South Wales started average, found a rich vein of form in the middle order, and fell back to average towards the end but ultimately came close to the magic 500 number. AW Wright carved through the first three batsmen in his first session but was unable to stop a few good men doing the damage on a batter-friendly wicket. AP James however took a pair of big scalps on the second day's play to stop the bleeding.
NSW 488
H Cranney 123; TJE Andrews 98; RB Minnett 89
AW Wright 4-131; AP James 3-140
Victoria lacked a good reply and they only found a half-century man in the ninth spot of the order. Right after lunch on day three they sat at 134-6 with CE Pellew the current highscorer and latest casualty to a rampant set of bowlers. WO Cooper saved some blushes by dragging the score to more than double what it was when he walked out to the crease. New South Wales knew that they probably wouldn't be able to bowl out the side again for much less, but decided it would be best to enforce the follow on.
NSW 488
SA 315
WO Cooper 81; CE Pellew 42; HB Willsmore 42
RB Minnett 3-37; C Kelleway 3-99; JA Randell 3-100
Second Innings
A much better start led to Victoria putting some pressure on their opponents, even if the lead was less than half of what NSW managed in the first innings. CE Pellew was one of two men to get close to his century, and WO Cooper was unable to replicate his earlier performance, caught at mid wicket for just 2.
NSW 488
SA 315 + 403
ER Mayne 90; CE Pellew 88; WS Stirling 61
RB Minnett 3-61; JA Randell 3-128
New South Wales suffered an even more disturbing start than their first innings and things did not look like improving. Centurion H Cranney was bowled for a duck by WS Stirling and the team was surprisingly 39 runs short of victory with one last wicket remaining. JD Scott and JA Randell fought hard, and endured a lot of determined bowling on a wicket that had drastically turned from one good for batting to one that the bowlers loved, before the latter finally succumbed to WO Cooper's delivery that wrecked his stumps. New South Wales lost a match they should have won and had a couple of days before they would play in Victoria to consider their follow-on decision.
NSW 488 + 223
SA 315 + 403
JD Scott 54*; HG Pratten 35
AW Wright 5-66; WO Cooper 2-42; WS Stirling 2-51
South Australia won by seven runs.
This blog is to share results in my sports replay gaming. All of the games involve pencil, paper, cards and dice; no digital gaming here. Most games are full season replays, but there will also be some fictional competitions thrown in. It's been a while, but I hope that 2017 sees a return of blog activity.

- I have been an M.E. sufferer for a long time now, but sports replay gaming is an easy hobby for me to enjoy. Originally from Canvey Island, Essex, I was introduced to replay gaming a few years ago, leading to my first purchase: Cricket World. Most sports I share will be common, but there are some more obscure replays thrown in. Thank you for visiting and I hope you enjoy your stay. Feel free to say hello! - Chris
