It wasn't a Merry Christmas for some today starting with Oakland's losing streak as it reaches five games, 1-7-2 in the month of December, with Popein (2) and Hicke (15) doing what they could in Boston. The Bruins are unbeaten in three games and return to the top of the East thanks in no small part to a four-goal first period with Orr (5) starting his hat trick, Westfall (4) and two from Williams (14) all scoring before the first intermission; Hodge (18) also scored as part of a three-pointer.
It was a riot in Chicago as their Original Six rival Canadians run over them making the Blackhawks the first team to lose ten games on home ice. G Tremblay (18) scored four times, including the game winner, and earned an assist. Lapierre (4), Cournoyer (12) and Backstrom (7), who had three helpers himself, gave Montreal their third win in five; Worsley picking up his fourth shutout of the year.
It is the first time in sixteen games that Toronto have lost back to back games, Ellis (12) and Keon (6) scoring the first and last goals of the game in Detroit. On the other side the Red Wings get back to back wins for the first time in thirteen matches thanks to F Smith (10), G Jarrett (17), Henderson (7) and P Mahovlich (8).
Another four-time goal scorer in a five point night was Connelly (22) of the Minnesota North Stars making him the first on his team to hit twenty goals and thirty points; Cullen (10) and Parise (4) help them reach one-hundred goals before any other team in the West. St Louis have lost two after their recent five match unbeaten run; Schock (3) with their only goal.
The big scores keep coming, this time it's Philadelphia on the wrong end of a thumping with only Hannigan (12) scoring for the Flyers in a game containing eight goals which gave them the lead but does not prevent them picking up back to back losses for the first time in sixteen. New York are four without defeat thanks to two goals each from Gilbert (14), Nevin (13) and Goyette (8), the latter two also assisting, and a three point game from game winning goal scorer D Marshall (5).
The Kings stay undefeated in six straight coming back from a 0-3 deficit in Pittsburgh. Ingarfield (5), Konik (8) and Bathgate (13) on the powerplay had the Penguins well in control at the first intermission but Irvine (6) in the second period, Amadio (3) and Flett (14) shorthanded in the third, gave LA a point.
