Boston losing in New York was not unexpected with the Bruins not hitting a three game winning streak in their last thirty-two; only McKenzie (18) able to score on the Rangers. NYR's first three game win streak of the year, and their fourth victory in five games, puts them just two points behind the Red Wings in that three-way battle for fourth place. Gilbert (19) scored twice with Goyette's (14) game winner adding to goals from D Marshall (6), Kurtenbach (5) and R Stewart (9)
A twelve goal thriller in St Louis leaves the North Stars four games without a win as six goals in the opening period; J Roberts (14) and Berenson (10) twice with B McCreary (16) and Schock (7) also scoring in the first twenty minutes to chase Bauman out of net. Maniago was more solid in goal for Minnesota and their offense responded positively with Parise's (7) pair either side of the first interval adding to goals from Connelly (30), Masteron (8) and Cullen (19), but an insurance marker from J Roberts (14), along with assists from Melnyk making him the first Blues player to hit thirty points, gave the hosts a third win in four.
In the month of January the Philadelphia Flyers have won just once in ten games and their winless streak hits seven as they manage only one goal, Sutherland (16), in Toronto. The Leafs hit a five game winning run for the second time this year and won their seventh in the last eight games on the back of Bower's fifteenth victory of the season tying him for the league lead along with New York's Giacomin. Toronto's goals came from Keon (10), Conacher (7), Walton (24), Carleton (4) and a game winner from Eillis (16) and places them on top of the NHL standings.
