A penalty fueled first period to start the season yielded no goals despite the Maple Leafs winning the physical battles and getting plenty of rubber on Glenn Hall leading to a 17-6 shot advantage after twenty minutes. Toronto, 0-3 on the powerplay in the first period, had a fourth powerplay opportunity in the second frame, but it was almost inevitable that their inability to take advantage would lead to a goal at the other end. Sure enough, up steps Kenny Wharram to get Chicago on the board first, beating the buzzer to end the period by four seconds.
The Blackhawks then doubled their lead with the man advantage in the third; Bob Baun serving a double minor for roughing. The Leafs had managed to kill off the first minor, but Ab McDonald ultimately made the visitors pay. Baun was again assessed a double minor for roughing, but this time he took Eric Nesterenko with him, and it was on this four-on-four that Bob Nevin pulled one back for Toronto with just over ten minutes to play. Both teams had chances to score again but the keepers stood tall.
