Boston get their first victory of the season at the fifth attempt, downing the Canadians 5-2 in Montreal. With penalties galore, the special teams became all important and the Bruins scored their first two goals on the powerplay; both Murray Oliver and Tommy Williams grabbing their second of the year. The first period scoring was rounded out in last minute by Charlie Burns's first of the season
More penalties to Montreal led to a 4-0 lead as John Bucyk (2), along with the assisting Leo Boivin, picked up his second point of the game. The Canadians pulled one back a few minutes later through Jean Beliveau (1), but the four goal deficit was restored just over a minute after through Oliver's second of the night.
Montreal were shorthanded seven times throughout the game, mostly through Lou Fontinato, but had four powerplays of their own starting late in the second period. Unable to score there they did get a powerplay tally early in the final frame, their first of the season in fourteen attempts, to make it a final score of 5-2 and a third consecutive loss for the Habs.
