Bob Gilbertson's season is not over yet and a good run of results would see him right back into the title picture. A tight victory here would give him confidence after winning just six races in six events; four of which came in the same round at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. Jim Head could more than make up the 29 point difference between himself and Brian Thiel, who he races for the first time this year, with another win in Ennis. Head was able to close in on fifteenth place in the standings after his final appearance at the Toyo Tires NHA Nationals. Thiel has lost four in a row.

These two met on three occasions in the opening five rounds, but it has not been until this, the twentieth event of the season, that Tony Pedregon was able to make it four wins in four against Bode who is still searching for another win; his only two coming in the Lucas Oil Mist NHRA Nationals, where he knocked off both Del Worsham and Bob Tasca III before T.Pedregon beat him on his way to a second successive final win.

Another non-finish, this time Jerry Toliver, another driver looking to find a way to win after an early-season semifinal defeat. He has only qualified in another four events since then. Del Worsham wins his tenth first-round race of the season in seventeen qualifications.
