The third game between these teams, and the first to be played in Chicago, results in the first win for New York over the Blackhawks, leapfrogging both the Wings and Leafs to move into second place.
A clean, even first period was even at the interval with the Rangers scoring a powerplay goal; Harry Howell's first of the season with Al MacNeil serving two minutes for interference. Just over five minutes later the red hot Stan Mikita scores his tenth of the season and his first even strength goal this year.
New York went back into the lead in the second period, again on the powerplay through another high-scoring forward: Camille Henry (7) putting away Prentice's second assist of the night. After they survived their only penalty of the game, the Rangers got an important two-goal lead through Bathgate (4), giving Dean Prentice a three point night.
Chicago managed to kill off a penalty early in the third period but a quick double from the Rangers looked have seen the game put to bed. Vic Hadfield and Doug Harvey opened their accounts and the team lead 5-1 with 6:16 left to play.
But it was not over yet. Ab McDonald (4,5) scored twice in quick succession with Len Lunde scoring his first goal, and indeed point, of the season to make it a one-goal game. All three goals coming in just 2:04, but despite pulling Hall for an extra skater the Rangers were able to stand their ground when it mattered.
