A seventh consecutive win for the Blackhawks increases their lead in the standings to fifteen points over their closest rivals, the Canadians and the Rangers they beat here. This is already the third trip to New York and Chicago has won all three visits.
Denis DeJordy picked up his first win of the season in his second outing, stopping thirty-two shots. His opposite number, Gump Worsley, managed to make thirty-six saves in a losing effort, leaving him with a record of 6-7-2.
Chicago had the better of the opening period out shooting the Rangers 16-9, and taking a 3-1 lead into the second frame. Murray Balfour claimed his fourth and fifth goals of the season, either side of a Vic Hadfield (2) tally, with Bobby Hull scoring just his third on the year to go with his ten assists.
The second period was more even, New York leading in shots 12-11, but Eric Nesterenko (4) extended his team's lead with his third game-winning goal, before a fightback from New York. Camille Henry (12) keeps up his strong start to the campaign, and third line winger Rod Gilbert took his points total up to eight with his second goal.
Both sides exchanged powerplay opportunities in the third, but the talking point of the scoreless period was Stan Mikita and his ejection from the game for spearing.
