The lack of action through much of the game was more than made up for by the grandstand finale. Boston outshot the Rangers in all three periods but were unable to beat Marcel Paille in his first game of the season until the fifth minute of the second period. New York then went onto a powerplay they could not capitalise on. Previously, both sides had opportunities on the man-advantage in the first period; Dave Balon the more severe offense as he served the entire four minutes for cross checking without further punishment from the Bruins.
With time running out the Rangers got the tying goal from their star Camille Henry, but celebrations were cut short when Jerry Toppazzini restored his teams lead forty-three seconds later after a great team move. After a timeout New York pulled their netminder and watched Henry score his second of the night with ten ticks left on the clock.
