A late first period goal from Alex Delvecchio (3) saw the Red Wings take a 1-0 lead into the second where both sides exchanged goals. Gordie Howe (7) and Bruce MacGregor (3) sandwiched Montreal's first goal from Don Marshall (2). Claude Provost (4) rounded out the scoring 4-on-4 before heading into the third period where Detroit once again restored their two goal lead through Pete Goegan (2). Dickie Moore (6, 7) then turned it on for the Canadians before the midpoint of the final frame but, with a 17-5 shot advantage in the third period, Montreal were unable to take more than a point.
