New York wins their sixth match in the last seven games to tie Detroit for the final playoff spot in the standings with the Red Wings easing backwards thanks to a third consecutive loss and still searching for their first win in the Big Apple after three 2-3 defeats and two ties.
Both netminders were perfect through the scoreless first period stopping twelve shots each but, after killing off a minor penalty credited to Dave Balon, the Rangers opened the scoring with Ted Hampson grabbing his first goal of a campaign where he has seen little action. Andy Bathgate (22) doubled the lead on his way to a two point night, and then Camille Henry scored what would the game-winner on the powerplay, his thirty-fourth tally which is good enough to tie Stan Mikita for the league lead.
With the game fifty minutes old and both sides continuing to battle end to end Detroit made the finale exciting with goals from a pair of the lesser celebrated members of the team. Vic Stasiuk and Floyd Smith scored their seventh goals of the year - good enough for joint fifth on the team with Alex Delvecchio and Bruce MacGregor - 3:46 apart to set up a grandstand finish. New York held on despite a late flurry of activity in their own end.
