There was a strong day of competition in the Juryo division with the match of the day coming when Matsuyama won his first bout of the basho, beating Tamakiyama. Kotochitose was able to stay one back of the unbeaten Aobajo and Daihi by winning out over Banryuyama, and Mitsuruyama was also involved in a close battle, this time he had to contend with a strong showing from Kotowaka.
