A Herculean effort from Eddie Johnston denied Detroit a two point gap over the Rangers after stopping forty-nine shots; twenty of them in the third period where he was beaten early by a Alex Delvecchio powerplay effort. Boston had taken the lead late in the second through Dean Prentice who has sparked the Bruins' powerplay since his trade from New York with four of his seven Boston goals coming on the man advantage.

Two Chicago goals in sixty-five seconds turned the game around after New York had gone into the intermission 1-0 up through a very late Andy Bathgate goal. Bobby Hull and Bill Hay then scored the goals that gave the Blackhawks the lead, and Ron Murphy's score early in the third period would prove to be the game winner despite the Rangers having many chances for their league leading powerplay units to add to their tally and not fall behind the Red Wings once again.
