Any chance New York had of making the playoffs may be over as they were blown out by Boston in their own barn. The Rangers could have believed they had a very good chance of winning this game and that is why they rested Gump Worsley, laying the goaltending burden on Marcel Paille, but it backfired and now New York needs to win the return game against the Bruins before returning home to take on the Canadiens. They also need help from the Toronto Maple Leafs to take all four points in their upcoming encounters. The telling statistic is just one Rangers win in their last six games.

After a league leading seventeenth home defeat it looks as though Toronto will have to face the Chicago Blackhawks in the postseason as the top seed faces the third, and second takes on fourth leaving Montreal and Detroit the other likely matchup.
